Praise for "Route 1 Rendezvous"
"Allie's (main character's) story draws the reader's sympathy. She is aware of the struggle within her own mind and body,
although it takes her much of the book to understand the reasons for the struggle and to develop strategies for managing it. The friends she makes in her new school are diverse and interesting, and the poetry they create rings true."
"Running with Asthma" demonstrates some of the ways in which the heroine of "Route 1 Rendezvous" was inspired by events in John Terry McConnell's own life. "Running" is billed as a memoir. It is also to some extent a self-help book. In it, McConnell describes his history of learning how to continue running- a passion he developed beginning in childhood-while dealing with asthma...his joy in breaking through the limits imposed on him by the disease is inspiring..."

This year as a 72-year old man I ran a 5k in 30:03, missing my goal of a sub 30 minute 5k by 4 tenths of a second. I attribute my continued success as a runner to breathing exercises described in the book, the healing power of breath: Simple Techniques to Reduce Stress and Anxiety, Enhance Concentration, and Balance Your Emotions by Richard P. Brown, MD and Patricia Gerbarg, MD

“I loved the story-line and characters of John Terry McConnell's novel. I loved the fact that these characters in the story had challenges that teens can relate to in their daily lives. I like the fact that the story avoided extreme graphic details of violence/sex/drugs/war but still had the edge of those challenges to capture my attention. I WANTED to turn the page to learn what choice the character would make next! Allie, Route 1 Rendezvous main character, IS the girl next door. Her character faces the complexity of challenges that any teens could or do face today.” Valerie Wlodyka, School Librarian, Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School, Palmer, MA
"Route 1 Rendezvous marvelously captured the many facets of the high school experience. While I can't say that all teen experience's are the same (someone must have been secure and well adjusted in HS) I can say that Terry captured so much that is true about fitting in, finding your path and figuring life out. This girl goes through many of life's biggest challenges during the course of the story (trying drugs/trying boys/moving/parental struggles/divorce) and so many of her reactions and emotions related to her events felt genuine. Songs/music are connected to the characters experiences which I thought served the story well. I read the book in one sitting and am glad I found it." LJP
